Martins Pond is situated at Potten End a village close enough to both Berkhamsted and the western extremity of Hemel Hempstead for convenience, yet far enough distant to preserve its own special character and way of life. A 10-metre wide section of Grims Dyke, the ancient boundary bank-and-ditch earthwork of Iron Age or Saxon origin, is clearly visible nearby as are other historical attractions The current building dates back to 1924 but the site of the public house has been a source of hospitality for both locals and visitors since the 17th Century. Its first reference to being a beer house was in 1850 when it was known as ' The Plumbers Arms' . By 1896 it was owned by Frederick Quincey Lane who owned Lane Nurseries close by and was a watering hole for the workforce. It changed ownership several times from then and was also once known as 'The Red Lion' before becoming Martins Pond appropriately named after the village green on which it nestles. If you have any pictures or know any other interesting history please do not hesitate to contact us. |
